  • "Splendid" —New York Times "Mind-bending." —Wall Street Journal "Brilliantly original. The best new novel I've read this year." —Salman Rushdie A daring, kaleidoscopic novel about the clash of empires and ideas, told through a tennis match in the sixteenth century between the radical Italian artist Caravaggio and the Spanish poet Francisco de Quevedo, played with a ball made from the hair of the beheaded Anne Boleyn. The poet and the artist battle it out in Rome before a crowd that includes Galileo, a Mary Magdalene, and a generation of popes who would throw the world into flames. In England, Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII execute Anne Boleyn, and her crafty executioner transforms her legendary locks into those most-sought-after tennis balls. Across the ocean in Mexico, the last Aztec emperors play their own games, as the conquistador Hernán Cortés and his Mayan translator and lover, La Malinche, scheme and conquer, fight and f**k, not knowing that their domestic comedy will change the course of history. In a remote Mexican colony a bishop reads Thomas More’s Utopia and thinks that it’s a manual instead of a parody. And in today’s New York City, a man searches for answers to impossible questions, for a book that is both an archive and an oracle. Álvaro Enrigue’s mind-bending story features assassinations and executions, hallucinogenic mushrooms, bawdy criminals, carnal liaisons and papal schemes, artistic and religious revolutions, love and war. A blazingly original voice and a postmodern visionary, Enrigue tells the grand adventure of the dawn of the modern era, breaking down traditions and upending expectations, in this bold, powerful gut-punch of a novel. Game, set, match. “Sudden Death is the best kind of puzzle, its elements so esoteric and wildly funny that readers will race through the book, wondering how Álvaro Enrigue will be able to pull a novel out of such an astonishing ball of string. But Enrigue absolutely does; and with brilliance and clarity and emotional warmth all the more powerful for its surreptitiousness.” —Lauren Groff, New York Times-bestselling author of Fates and Furies "Engrossing... rich with Latin and European history." —The New Yorker "[A] bawdy, often profane, sprawling, ambitious book that is as engaging as it is challenging.” —Vogue

  • Fast, furious and fatal . . . a pair of killers seek brutal revenge. When a homeless veteran is found dead in a squalid Sacramento alley, FBI special agent Megan Elliott vows to find the murdered hero’s killer. Her investigation gets complicated fast, for the victim, a former Delta Force soldier, is just one link in a nationwide spree of torture and murder. Straight off a job rescuing medical missionaries, soldier-for-hire Jack Kincaid returns to his home base in the Texas border town of Hidalgo only to receive the news that one of his closest colleagues–also ex-military–has been brutally murdered. Faced with an inept local police force, Jack takes matters into his own hands. Now, as part of a national task force to stop the sadistic killings, by-the-book Megan and burn-the-book Jack form a tense alliance, sparked with conflict and temptation. But they struggle against more than passion, for a vicious pair of killers has only just begun a rampage of evil . . . and the primary target is much closer than Megan suspects.

  • This book considers the practical management of sudden death and offers first-hand reflections of how emergency physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals cope. Sudden death is one of the most difficult aspects of emergency care, and the traumatic nature of some deaths can be devastating for the family and the emergency team. This book shows how practitioners confront the sudden death and the essential steps taken to manage the event that may have a critical impact on the grieving relative. The book explores the unique interactions between emergency and allied health practitioners and nurses, those who grieve and, the body itself. By understanding what is involved in sudden death work, and the practical, psychosocial and spiritual tensions that arise from managing the event and sequel, it may be possible to provide a more responsive service. The book addresses sudden death from the multi-professional emergency and allied services perspective to guide either the seasoned practitioners or the new and apprehensive recruit. National emergency response systems have been strengthened to cope with the increasing trauma and disease burden which, for many unfortunate individuals, results in an immediate or swift death trajectory. This multidisciplinary teaching text uses first-hand detailed stories of sudden death encounters. By reflecting on these ‘happenings’ and illuminating on how specific events were handled, it is possible to build a picture not only of what sudden death workers ‘do’ when sudden death occurs but also how they feel about what they ‘do’. At the end of each chapter a series of activities will be posed to encourage the reader to make sense of their own practices when handling the legal and practical aspects and when supporting families and colleagues.

  • The youngest of nine children, Michael Downing was three when his father died — suddenly and inexplicably. No autopsy was performed. The family diagnosis was God's will. As a boy, Downing rigorously trained as a spiritual athlete, preparing to vault into heaven. But eventually he escaped the religious dogma, and the family arena — until one of his brothers died in 2003, suddenly and inexplicably. No autopsy was performed. Alarmed, Downing pursued a diagnosis: Drawn into a world of researchers, clinicians, and manufacturers with their own arcane ethics and faith, Downing discovered he had inherited a mutant protein from his father, and the first symptom would be his sudden death. To save his life, a defibrillator was hard–wired to his heart. Within weeks, he needed emergency surgery to remove the device and the life–threatening infection he got with it. Two months later, he was re–implanted — only to read in his morning newspaper that the new wires anchored to his heart were prone to failure. His device might be powerless, or it might deliver a series of unwarranted, possibly fatal, shocks. From a bedeviled boyhood in the Berkshires to a grim comedy of errors in one of Boston's best hospitals, Life with Sudden Death is a wild ride.

  • What is killing healthy young Americans? 2020 saw a spike in deaths in America, smaller than you might imagine during a pandemic, some of which could be attributed to COVID and to initial treatment strategies that were not effective. But then, in 2021, the stats people expected went off the rails. The CEO of the OneAmerica insurance company publicly disclosed that during the third and fourth quarters of 2021, death in people of working age (18–64) was 40 percent higher than it was before the pandemic. Significantly, the majority of the deaths were not attributed to COVID. A 40 percent increase in deaths is literally earth-shaking. Even a 10 percent increase in excess deaths would have been a 1-in-200-year event. But this was 40 percent. And therein lies a story—a story that starts with obvious questions: What has caused this historic spike in deaths among younger people? What has caused the shift from old people, who are expected to die, to younger people, who are expected to keep living? It isn’t COVID, of course, because we know that COVID is not a significant cause of death in young people. Various stakeholders opine about what could be causing this epidemic of unexpected sudden deaths, but “CAUSE UNKNOWN” doesn’t opine or speculate. The facts just are, and the math just is. The book begins with a close look at the actual human reality behind the statistics, and when you see the people who are represented by the dry term Excess Mortality, it’s difficult to accept so many unexpected sudden deaths of young athletes, known to be the healthiest among us. Similarly, when lots of healthy teenagers and young adults die in their sleep without obvious reason, collapse and die on a family outing, or fall down dead while playing sports, that all by itself raises an immediate public health concern. Or at least it used to. Ask yourself if you recall seeing these kinds of things occurring during your own life—in junior high? In high school? In college? How many times in your life did you hear of a performer dropping dead on stage in mid-performance? Your own life experience and intuition will tell you that what you’re about to see is not normal. Or at least it wasn’t normal before 2021.

  • In 1705–1706, an ‘epidemic’ of mysterious deaths terrorized Rome. Pope Clement XI’s physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, was ordered to perform a series of dissections to discover the cause of the epidemic, which hindered confession, thus threatening the victim’s salvation. The book that Lancisi subsequently published, De subitaneis mortibus (‘On Sudden Deaths’, 1707), is one of the earliest modern scientific investigations of death. Sudden Death explores how a new scientific interpretation of death first came into being, and led the way to a belief in the 'conquest of death' by medicine which remains to this day.

Owned by the controversial Carroll Rosenbloom and led by head coach Weeb Ewbank and six future Hall of Fame players--Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore, Jim Parker, Art Donovan and Gino Marchetti--they won the NFL title that season, defeating the New York Giants in the first sudden death championship game in NFL history. The Colts laid the foundation for the ultra-popular spectacle football would become with the American public. They were a talented group of players. Many had been rejected or underappreciated at various points in their careers though they were loved and respected by the blue collar fans of Baltimore. This book tells the complete story of the '58 Colts and the city's love affair with the team.

  • Sudden Death, first published in 1935 as part of the Red Badge Mystery Series, features private detective Peter Clancy, assisted by his valet Wiggars. Author Emma Redington Lee Thayer (1874-1973) published 60 novels during her long career, all but one featuring detective Peter Clancy. Synopsis from the original edition: The body of Marvin Hayden was discovered in his own library, dead from a bullet wound in his head. The pistol was undoubtedly his. The Medical Examiner testified that the shot could have been fired by his own hand. But the old butler, Gillespie, scoffs at the idea of suicide. He knows what he knows. “... Caught red-handed. Yes! The two of them together. And blood on his hands! Let them squirm and lie. The truth will out. Even if Mr. Valentine did drag in the smart red-headed detective, Mr. Peter Clancy. But of course he wanted to protect his sister. And if she was in it, so was Mr. James, mind you. And no one but a man’s own old faithful servant to see that justice was done! The master never killed himself, mark you. His sudden death was not suicide but—MURDER!” Lee Thayer’s latest is a thrilling and fiendishly ingenious story—the mystery of the minute. • Sudden death is probably the greatest challenge facing modem cardiology today. This is mainly due to the impact of its brusque appearance and the socioeconomic implications. The incidende is presently decreasing somewhat, mainly due to the decline in new cases of ischemic heart disease on one hand, and to better preven tion in risk patients on the other. Nevertheless, the figures are still high and represent over 300.000 patients per year in the United States alone. This book is an updating of the problem of sudden death from a multifactorial standpoint. It includes not only electrophysiologic data but also covers aspects ranging from epidemiology to prevention. Risk markers and triggering mechanicsms of sudden death are reviewed, with special emphasis on the role of electrical instability, ischemia and depressed ventricular function. The book includes the contributions from many experts, often pioneers in their respective fields. It is our hope that the book serves as an Updating for those cardiologist who are not specialized in these subjects, but may also be of interest to the expert. We wish to express our sincerest gratitude to the authors for sending in their work so promptly, and also Kluwer Academic Publishers for their exactitude and perfection in this edition.

  • Sudden in-custody restraint deaths have emerged as a critical and imp- tant problem for police, correctional, and medical care workers. The scope and magnitude of the problem clearly reveals that the subject matter is worthy of further consideration. Although the frequency of these deaths is very low, the criticality of its occurrence requires attention to the subject matter. The purpose of Sudden Deaths in Custody is to provide current information that addresses the issue from a number of perspectives. It is our purpose to assemble, under one title, current research that addresses the varying facets that underscore the nature of sudden in-custody deaths. The intent is to provide information that can further educate and assist those officers, adm- istrators, investigators, trainers, and medical personnel who must interact, intervene, and make decisions about how to prevent sudden in-custody deaths. Sudden Deaths in Custody specifically addresses sudden in-custody deaths that occur after a violent confrontation. Such incidents may occur after police or correction officers’ intervention, but also include incidents that may occur in a mental health facility or emergency medical field setting. The deaths described in this volume all involve sudden death within minutes or hours of contact preceded by one or more of the following: violent confrontation with police or corrections personnel, forcible control measures, and behavior inf- enced by a chemical substance, or mental impairment. Incidents involving custodial suicides, homicides, accidents, fatal pursuits, or police shootings are excluded.

  • This intimate story of Lynyrd Skynyrd tells of how a band of lost souls and self-destructive misfits with uncertain artistic objectives clawed their way to the top of the rock 'n' roll world. Based on interviews with surviving band members, Whiskey Bottles and Brand-New Cars shares how lead singer and front man Ronnie Van Zant guided the band's hugely successful five-year run and, in the process, created not only a new country rock idiom, but a new Confederacy in constant conflict with old Southern totems and prejudices. Placing the music and personae of Skynyrd into a broad cultural context, this book gives a new perspective to a history of stage fights, motel-room destructions, cunning business deals, and brilliant studio productions. It also offers a greater appreciation for a band whose legacy, in the aftermath of their last plane ride, has since descended into self-caricature.

  • It's easy to take it all for granted and go through life feeling invincible--especially if you've spent your life successfully facing challenges, overcoming obstacles in the way, and working hard to improve yourself both mentally and physically. Yet for all of us, this feeling of invincibility is an illusion. From Sudden Death to Paradise shares one man's story of suddenly facing his mortality and coming to terms with what he experienced. After being exposed to toxic chemicals while in the military, and unknown to him, author T. S. Dismas developed an autoimmune disease that would kill him--one night, Dismas suffered sudden heart failure and died for ten minutes. Yet in that moment, he had a near-death experience and visited heaven, where he would learn a valuable lesson about himself, his life, his faith, and God. No amount of suffering could take away his joy and peace, and after his experience, life was now sweet and truly a gift. With a new heart--both literally and spiritually--he was able to realize his previous life was not part of God's plan, and that embracing God's love is the only way to sustain happiness and find meaning in this life.

  • "As more than a million readers have learned to their delight, Kienzle is a font of funny stories. He has created one of the most likable and authentic of all recent sleuths—the shy, sly Father Koesler—whose exploits into crime and insights into parish life have continued in seven gossipy and cozy mysteries." —Chicago Tribune "Kienzle's best book since The Rosary Murders." —Publishers Weekly "It's a cracking good mystery." —Houston Chronicle When Father Koesler joined the God Squad, he learned that all the fouls weren't on the field. Was murder someone's idea of a game? Abruptly removed from his spectator status by a chilling turnover, the amateur sleuth takes on the pros. Hank "the Hun" Hunsiger had made a career out of making enemies. The thirty-seven year-old tight end for the Pontiac Cougars was widely hated. When the clock stopped on Hunsinger's life, the only question was, which one of his many enemies did it? The focus of the police investigation turned to the God Squad, a Bible Study group consisting of a curious assortment of his Cougar associates ranging from owner Jay Galloway to rookie Kit Hoffer—plus the peripatetic Father Robert Koesler. Asked to aid in the investigation, Father Koesler leads us play by play to a startling conclusion. In his seventh appearance, Father Koesler enters the world of pro football, an involvement his readers will want to renew. From kickoff to final gun, Father Koesler wins again.

  • Each of the authors brings a unique perspective, one being the parent of an infant who died of SIDS long before it was defined and who has brought understanding and comfort to untold thousands of other families so stricken. The others are proven investigators in the field. It is clear from their analyses that SIDS parents experience premonitions of doom nearly ten times more often than parents whose babies do not die. Clearly this is a signal for continued intensive study of the phenomenon.
