  • In a novel as timely as it is terrifying, New York Times-bestselling author Robin Cook explores the controversial clash of politics and biotechnology. When Dr. Daniel Lowell and his partner, Dr. Stephanie D’Agostino, discover a new cloning procedure that utilizes stem cells to treat otherwise incurable and degenerative diseases, they know they’ve hit the medical jackpot. But with their cutting-edge method pending approval, they run into a roadblock by the name of Senator Ashley Butler, who views their technique as an attack on traditional American values. Then Butler is diagnosed with rapidly progressing Parkinson’s disease, and he must make a Faustian pact with the very doctors whose groundbreaking technology he is trying to destroy: treatment in exchange for unwavering support. But the DNA transference procedure has never been tested before, and working under less than favorable conditions to keep the premature trial under wraps, the doctors place their careers—and their patient’s life—at risk, all in the name of scientific progress. Once they hit the point of no return, they feel invincible, but when Butler starts experiencing violent, horrifying seizures, they realize their luck may have run out…

  • The primary aim of Treating Nonepileptic Seizures: Therapist Guide is to equip physicians, psychologists, therapists, nurses, and other practitioners with a validated, step-by-step treatment for psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (NES) that can improve the lives of patients with this disabling disorder. Patients with NES frequently present in neurology, psychiatry, psychology, and emergency departments. The disorder has been documented in the medical literature for centuries, and much is known about the phenomenology, seizure characteristics, psychiatric comorbidities, neuropsychological testing, and psychosocial aspects in NES. However, until recently, much less was known about the effective treatments of patients with psychogenic NES. This intervention provides guidance for clinicians in treating patients with NES and is designed to be used in conjunction with the patient workbook, Taking Control of Your Seizures. Session by session, the Workbook facilitates communication between treatment providers and individual patients with seizures. The authors' clinical experience with epilepsy and NES and research in developing the treatment approach for seizures directly informed the treatment model described. Many patients treated with the intervention have demonstrated improvements in seizures, symptoms, and quality of life.

  • The first physician attending to the patient should establish and record the course of the seizure, including pre-ictal as well as post-ictal signs and symptoms. Eyewitness accounts of the event are of utmost importance and should be obtained immediately after the seizure, e.g. from a person accompanying the patient who saw the event, either in person or by telephone. This may be crucial for diagnosis. The patient should be referred for neurological investigations for the confirmation of the diagnosis and for aetiological studies (in adult-onset epilepsy, a brain tumour should be considered as a possible cause). Brain imaging should be arranged quickly, but not necessarily as an emergency. The diagnostic approach after a first seizure associated with alcohol withdrawal should be the same as after an epileptic seizure, i.e. a single brain scan is warranted. If an episode of unconsciousness is not clearly epileptic in nature, an adult patient will often primarily need cardiac investigations.

  • A prolonged seizure with unconsciousness is a life-threatening emergency situation requiring immediate care. An epileptic seizure lasting for more than 5 minutes should be treated as an imminent status epilepticus. Mortality and the risk of disability increase when a seizure with unconsciousness has lasted for more than 30 minutes. The prognosis can be influenced by early treatment that is as effective as possible. Status epilepticus (SE) requires follow-up at hospital and aetiological investigations (brain imaging studies, cerebrospinal fluid samples, additional laboratory investigations), as well as treatment even after the acute situation has settled. When a patient with known epilepsy has had a prolonged seizure it is usually warranted to consider intensification of the basic medication and other possible measures by a neurologist.

  • Many of us know that medical marijuana can help millions of patients suffering from a variety of diseases and ailments, especially epileptic seizures. Strains and concentrates that are high in CBD are increasingly being used to reduce or manage the number of debilitating seizures that plague sufferers of epilepsy and Dravet's syndrome. But human beings may not be the only ones who benefit from cannabinoid therapy: pets are starting to receive high CBD treatment, too.An estimated 1-5% of all dogs can suffer from either symptomatic or idiopathic seizures. Symptomatic seizures are typically caused by abnormalities that exist inside or outside of the brain (e.g., encephalitis, head trauma, metabolic health problems, lead poisoning).Idiopathic epilepsy, however, has no underlying cause and may be genetic. Breeds that are prone to inherit symptomatic seizures include beagles, German shepherds, Keeshonds, Belgian shepherds, dachshunds, Hungarian Viszlas, English springer spaniels, Irish wolfhounds, collies, and border dogs. Additional breeds can have a high incidence of seizure disorders, namely golden retrievers, Irish setters, Saint Bernards, American cocker spaniels, wirehaired fox terriers, Alaskan malamutes, Siberian huskies, Welsh springer spaniels, Labrador retrievers, miniature schnauzers, mastiffs, boxers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, and poodles. Dogs that suffer from epileptic seizures are commonly prescribed phenobarbital, a medication commonly used to treat seizures. While it's recommended by the World Health Organization to treat certain types of epilepsy in developing countries, it can carry some serious side effects in both humans and pets, including lethargy, increased appetite, dizziness, confusion, and long-term liver damage. This book is going to guide you on the following What is cbd oil What dog seizure and epilepsy The dosage, recommendation and side effect of using cbd oil for dog How to purchase and the cbd in market for dog seizure

Airfield Seizure, The Modern 'Key To The Country'

  • Genre : History
  • This monograph examines the key determinants necessary for the successful forced entry seizure of an airfield. The importance of contingency operations is paramount to the United States military as it transitions from "forward defense" to "CONUS based." The ability to project power into an isolated objective area requires the rapid deployment and forced entry of a tailored force package. For many of our current OPLANS, the seizure of an airfield serves as a lodgment area for the introduction of combat power into the objective. The success of the entire contingency operation, in large part, depends upon the successful seizure of the airfield. The monograph analyzes three historical cases of airfield seizures using the Wass de Czege combat power model. Operation Mercury (Crete, 1941), Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada, 1983), and Operation Just Cause (Panama, 1989) are examples of operations that introduce combat power into the objective area. This analysis identifies the key determinants for the successful forced entry seizure of an airfield. This study concludes that an airfield seizure is fundamentally a deliberate attack to seize a terrain oriented objective. Success is achieved by the synchronization of maneuver, firepower, and protection by capable leadership. However, the unique nature of an airfield seizure requires special application of the four elements of combat power to ensure mission accomplishment.

  • Epilepsy is a perilous neurological disease covering about 4-5% of total population of the world. Its main characteristics are seizures which occur due to certain disturbance in brain function. It is characterized by recurrent, involuntary, paroxysmal seizure activity. Epilepsy is the result of a sudden disturbance of brain function, characterized by asynchronous firing in cerebral neurons. During epileptic seizures the patient is unaware of their physical as well as mental condition and hence physical injury may occur. Proper health care must be provided to the patients and this can be achieved only if the seizures are detected correctly in time. In this work, a system is designed using wavelet decomposition method and different training algorithms to train the network for classification of the EEG signals.

  • Stuart Ross McCallum shares a true account of his battle with epilepsy-beginning with the peculiar sensations he experienced as a teenager that led to his diagnosis and concluding with his eventual recovery from a temporal lobe lobectomy. McCallum vividly describes his twenty-year journey of living with epilepsy and how this unpredictable disease has not only impacted his life but the lives of everyone around him. For years he operated a business and managed his staff while battling an ever-increasing number of seizures. As his condition worsened and his postseizure responses became more intense, he was often prone to violent outbursts that threatened his safety as well as the safety of those in his inner circle. McCallum shares how the perception of the disease and the socially unacceptable behaviors that occurred as a result of his seizures eventually forced him to risk everything-he made the life-altering decision to undergo two brain operations that he hoped would provide freedom from a life of instability, danger, and stares from strangers. Beyond My Control provides an honest, emotional look into a highly complex and often misunderstood condition and how one man's perseverance helped him break through the darkness to find hope on the other side.

  • This work explores what is inarguably the most socially and economically transformative event in Zimbabwe since independence in 1980-the land seizure era. It explains why Mugabe risked the social and economic well-being of Zimbabwe by targeting commercial farms, which were a vital source of commodities, a major employer, and a critical source of tax revenue. It also uncovers why the 'land redistribution program,' as Mugabe and the ruling ZANU-PF party claimed the takeovers to be, occurred 20 years after independence and in a very chaotic manner.

In this book, we discuss self-reporting technologies for supporting epilepsy treatment. We also discuss about the diagnostic testing in epilepsy genetic clinical practice. Clinical aspects related to diagnosis in patients presenting psychogenic non-epileptic seizures vs. epileptic seizures and neurocysticercosis are discussed as well. We delivered novel aspects about the treatment for pseudoseizures. In another chapter, the authors estimated the prevalence of ischemic stroke in epileptic patients presenting subarachnoid neurocysticercosis and ischemic stroke frequency among HIV-positive patients, and finally other authors discuss autoimmune epilepsy, its new development, and its future directions. We are looking forward with confidence and pride to the remarkable role that this book will play for a new vision and mission.
