  • Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into a modern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it can speak powerfully today.

  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing

  • ISBN : 9781467422307

  • This monumental commentary on the book of Revelation, originally published in 1999, has been highly acclaimed by scholars, pastors, students, and others seriously interested in interpreting the Apocalypse for the benefit of the church. Too often Revelation is viewed as a book only about the future. As G. K. Beale shows, however, Revelation is not merely a futurology but a book about how the church should live for the glory of God throughout the ages -- including our own. Engaging important questions concerning the interpretation of Revelation in scholarship today, as well as interacting with the various viewpoints scholars hold on these issues, Beale's work makes a major contribution in the much-debated area of how the Old Testament is used in the Apocalypse. Approaching Revelation in terms of its own historical background and literary character, Beale argues convincingly that John's use of Old Testament allusions -- and the way the Jewish exegetical tradition interpreted these same allusions -- provides the key for unlocking the meaning of Revelation's many obscure metaphors. In the course of Beale's careful verse-by-verse exegesis, which also untangles the logical flow of John's thought as it develops from chapter to chapter, it becomes clear that Revelation's challenging pictures are best understood not by apparent technological and contemporary parallels in the twentieth century but by Old Testament and Jewish parallels from the distant past.

  • Of all the books of the Bible, few are as fascinating or as bewildering as Revelation. Its images grip the imagination: four grim horsemen, the Antichrist, the ten-horned beast, the ultimate battle at Armageddon, and, of course, 666, the “mark of the beast,” variously interpreted to signify everything from Hitler and Krushchev to credit cards and the Internet. Is the book of Revelation a blueprint for the future that needs decoding if we want to understand current events? Is it a book of powerful imagery, with warnings and promises for the church throughout the ages? Or is it essentially an imaginative depiction of historical events in the first century? Four Views on the Book of Revelation explores the four main views in which Revelation is understood: preterist, idealist, classical dispensationalist futurist, and progressive dispensationalist. The interactive Counterpoints forum allows each author not only to present his view, but also to offer brief commentary on other views presented. This evenhanded approach is ideal for comparing and contrasting stances in order to form a personal conclusion about the interpretation and meaning of Revelation. The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. • The Bible’s final book, Revelation, can seem intimidating or downright impossible to comprehend, but this guided tour by Bible scholar Tim LaHaye and renowned puzzle master Timothy E. Parker makes it easily understandable. Filled with complex imagery, vivid depictions of violence, and challenging spiritual references, Revelation is often set aside by readers in favor of more straightforward, easier-to-digest biblical material. Yet the capstone of the canon need not remain a mystery. Cleverly designed for maximum learning and retention, this book covers every verse of Revelation step by step and, for each grouping of verses, includes a short three-question pre-quiz; the passage of scripture being addressed; a precise explanation of what the scripture means; and, finally, the same three questions repeated with the answers provided. By following this method, you will be amazed at how well you retain the teachings. Absorb this book and discover afresh?or for the first time?the richness of Revelation and its God-breathed, life-changing power to deepen your walk of faith.

  • Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. (Rev. 1:3). Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. (Rev. 22:7). The author of the book of the revelation is Jesus Christ (Rev. 22:16). The Lord intended that this book should be read and studied especially by His people (Rev. 1:3). It is not a sealed book, as many suppose, but one which is open and easy to understand (Rev. 22:10). Bearing these facts in mind, we find the study of Revelation to be fascinating, illuminating and deeply profitable, instead of difficult and confusing. The messages in this volume constitute thirty-five radio sermons which were preached first over the Mutual Network and by foreign and short-wave stations around the world, from August, 1945, to April, 1946. The response to these radio messages was so enthusiastic and the evident desire for light on the book of the Revelation so general that we soon decided to print these studies on one volume. Hence this book. No attempt has been made to present an exhaustive verse-by-verse exposition of the book, but, rather, we have tried to present the general outline, the basic structure and the framework. We have dwelt at length on certain passages because they constitute the pillars of the book. Our purpose is to present clearly the general outline and structure, and then the details will fall naturally into their proper places. If certain simple rules are followed in reading and studying it, the book of the Revelation becomes clear, logical and easily understood. We present here a few rules which should be observed before studying the book: 1. Revelation is not a dark book. It is a revelation. 2. It is not necessary for one to understand all the symbols and details if he is to gain a deeper knowledge of the book as a whole. One need not be able to identify every tree in the forest to appreciate the beauty of the forest as a whole. 3. Observe the rule of literal interpretation. The greatest curse of the Christian Church is the evil of spiritualizing the Bible. Although there are many symbols and signs in the book, as in every other book and in our daily conversation, the context indicates whether a passage is to be interpreted literally or symbolically. Interpret literally, except where the context or grammatical structure clearly indicates that the reference is a symbol or a sign. 4. Approach the Book with a “fresh” mind. Try to forget the views you have held concerning the Book because others have declared it to be mysterious and beyond our understanding. Thousands of believers never read Revelation, but carefully avoid it simply because someone told them it is a dark book and impossible to understand. Study the book for yourself. 5. Read the book prayerfully, realizing that the Holy Spirit who infallibly inspired the book is also the person Who must illuminate the book. Never read a portion of scripture without first asking Him for light and guidance. We submit for your help the following simple outline of Revelation. Remember these five rules as you study it. If you will memorize the outline thoroughly, and keep it clearly before your mind, you will have no trouble filling in the details. Grand Rapids, Michigan M. R. DeHaan

  • In this accessible and provocative study, Brian Blount reads the book of Revelation through the lens of African American culture, drawing correspondences between Revelation's context and the long-standing suffering of African Americans. Applying the African American social, political, and religious experience as an interpretive cipher for the book's complicated imagery, he contends that Revelation is essentially a story of suffering and struggle amid oppressive assimilation. He examines the language of "martyr" and the image of the lamb, and shows that the thread of resistance to oppressive power that runs through John's hymns resonates with a parallel theme in the music of African America.

As with his other intensive examinations, Clarence Larkin sets out to clarify the many mysterious chapters and verses for the benefit of Christians seeking greater insight and knowledge of the holy text. Using his own system of organization, Larkin dispenses the various messages and meanings behind the Book of Revelation clearly. Throughout this superb work of Bible study, all explanations and assertions are supported by quotations of the scripture. The principle lessons and stories of Revelation each receive scrutiny, while the various Sevens - the Seven Dooms, Seven Personages, Seven Last Plagues, and so on, are explained in enlightening and authoritative detail. The culmination of more than twenty-five years of study, it is no exaggeration to say that Larkin's explanations of The Book of Revelation contain a life's work. Popular among Christians when first published in 1919, Larkin's detailed texts retain a devoted following to this day, while some of his greatest works were posthumously published in the late 1920s.

  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Pages : 256
  • ISBN : 9781101577073

  • Genre : Religion
  • A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

  • ISBN : 1545313970
  • Reader Reviews :
  • Genre : Books
  • This edition of Commentary on Revelation contains the original tables, so that readers may comprehend fully the explanations of the author. E. W. Bullinger's commentaries on the Bible are rightfully renowned. He remains a much-consulted source on the Book of Revelation, which has long been considered one of the most unusual and difficult to interpret portions of the New Testament. Many Christians find the text impenetrable, as its insights are hidden behind cryptic passages. A determined Biblical scholar and lifelong clergyman, E. W. Bullinger spent decades poring through the ancient texts of Christianity. He attempts to make even the most difficult passages, shrouded in nuance and unusual phrasing, clear for ordinary believers to understand. He commonly uses letters and lists to better arrange and explain the text, and on occasion uses columned tables to properly present and align information. This book is divided into specific chapters, each of which corresponds to a set of passages, event or vision which took place in the Book of Revelation. Bullinger looks at each passage in sequence, and presents a clear explanation which sits well with the Biblical canon. References to chapters and verse are bracketed, and readers may also follow along by having a copy of the New Testament to hand during readings. Those who read the Bullinger commentaries often feel a sense of enlightenment and demystification. Although usually acquainted with the Holy Bible from childhood, many Christians spend their lives not realizing the true depth and meaning behind the more difficult books of the Bible. E. W. Bullinger believed that any Christian, not merely scholars or member of the priesthood, could and should grasp the Word of God to the fullest. Although controversial and even condemned as blasphemous when he was alive for some of his theological views, E. W. Bullinger's labors to explain the Bible are mostly well-received by modern readers. Few scholars of the mysterious texts of the Bible present theses as thorough, tenacious and well-argued as Bullinger's. It is for this reason that his accounts, supported by voluminous research, are appreciated to this day.

  • The book of Revelation is perhaps the most theologically complex and literarily sophisticated text in the New Testament. In this commentary John Christopher Thomas and Frank Macchia make the brilliant but challenging text of Revelation more accessible and easier to understand on its own terms, rather than as a futuristic prophecy. In addition to their literary, exegetical, and theological analysis of the text, they offer sustained theological essays on the book's most significant themes and issues, accenting especially the underappreciated place of the Holy Spirit in the theology of the book.

  • To many people, the book of the Revelation is a mystery -- they're not sure what it teaches. Much of this confusion is caused by Bible teachers who step beyond the boundaries of Scripture and try to speculate about what will happen in the future -- which can lead to opinions and guesses that are seriously amiss. When it comes to the last days, how can we know for sure what the Bible says? By letting Scripture speak for itself, and by carefully separating the facts from the possibilities. That's what author David Levy does in his authoritative new commentary on Revelation, titled Revelation: Hearing the Last Word. You'll discover a surprisingly clear picture of what we can expect in the last days and find answers to key questions such as... -- How can we know if the end times are near? -- What can we know about the Antichrist? -- In what order will the events of the last days take place? -- What will happen to Israel during the Tribulation? -- What will life be like during the Millennial Kingdom? A valuable resource that describes what we can expect as we approach earth's final hour!

  • How is the God of heaven showing Himself to the world? How has He shown Himself to you? Sweet Revelation is one woman’s revelation story, a narrative memoir written to people in all walks of life. Author Davida Blanton describes times throughout her life when God showed Himself real to her. In her darkest moments of fear, disappointment, and grief, God’s arm brought comfort to Davida and healed her brokenness, wrapping her in truth, embracing her in love, protecting her in light. The word “revelation” means an unveiling. When something is unveiled before our eyes, it is made visible. When eternal things are unveiled before us, allowing us to “see” in the spiritual realm, our lives are affected in profound ways. We are changed. This happens differently for each person, because every man and woman has unique needs and experiences. This book tells how it’s happened for one woman and invites you to consider how it’s happened in your own life. Jesus said, “The person who has my commands and keeps them really loves me; and whoever really loves me...I will love him and will show Myself to him. I will let Myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him.” (John 14:21 AMP) Revelation of the sweetest kind. “I anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” -Words of Christ recorded in Revelation 3:18 (NKJV)

  • “There has never been a book provoking more delirium, foolishness and irrational movements, without any relationship to Jesus Christ [than the Book of Revelation].” —Jacques Ellul, Introduction Known for his trenchant critique of modernity and of those Christians who celebrate their captivity to it, Ellul here cuts to the heart of the theological intention of the Book of Revelation, and thereby reveals the liberating gospel in all its offensiveness. Neither an exhaustive commentary nor a work of historical-exegetical analysis, Apocalypse is a provocative, independent interpretation. Ellul seeks to rescue Revelation from the reassuring and orthodox banality to which commentators often reduce it. The goal is to perceive the totality of the book in its movement and structure. “Architecture in movement” is the key to understanding Revelation’s puzzling but simple message. This edition also comes with a new foreword by Jacob Marques Rollison who provides an essential aid for guiding readers through Ellul’s thorough engagement with Revelation.

John's Use of the Old Testament in Revelation

  • This book explores the variety of ways John contextually uses the Old Testament in the Apocalypse. The introduction surveys and evaluates recent studies, which have been divided over the issue of whether or not John uses the Old Testament with sensitivity to its original literary context (Beale, Fekkes and Bauckham argue in the affirmative, while Ruiz and Moyise contend that this was not John's focus and see implications for 'reader-response criticism'). The remainder of the book looks at various ways in which John uses the Old Testament and argues that there is a reciprocal interpretative relationship between the Old Testament and the Apocalypse. Studies of special interest concern the bearing of the Old Testament on Revelation's eschatology, on the issue of the millennium, and on the thorny problem of the grammatical solecisms.
