    Revelations
  • Author : Elaine Pagels
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Pages : 256
  • ISBN : 9781101577073
  • Reader Reviews : 19
  • Genre : Religion
  • A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

  • Reader Reviews :
  • Genre : Religion
  • Protestant reformers found the prophet and biblical prophecy to be exceptionally effective for framing their reforming work under the authority of Scripture-for the true prophet speaks the Word of God alone and calls the people, their worship, and their beliefs and practices back to the Word of God. uses the prophet and biblical prophecy as a powerful lens through which to view many aspects of the reformers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. G. Sujin Pak argues that these prophetic concepts served the substantial purposes of articulating a theology of the priesthood of all believers, a biblical model of the pastoral office, a biblical vision of the reform of worship, and biblical processes for discerning right interpretation of Scripture. Pak demonstrates the ways in which understandings of the prophet and biblical prophecy contributed to the formation of distinct confessional identities. She goes on to demonstrate the waning of explicit prophetic terminology, particularly among the next generation of Protestant leadership. Eventually, she shows, the Protestant reformers concluded that the figure of the prophet carried with it as many problems as it did benefits, though they continued to give much time and attention to the exegesis of biblical prophetic writings.

These books--Isaiah through Malachi--respond to three key moments in Israel's history: the end of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BCE, the end of the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE, and the beginning of the restoration from the Babylonian exile in 538 BCE. Gowan traces the theme of death and resurrection throughout these accounts, finding a symbolic message of particular significance to Christian interpreters of the Bible.

  • Christopher Columbus returned to Europe in the final days of 1500, ending his third voyage to the Indies not in triumph but in chains. Seeking to justify his actions and protect his rights, he began to compile biblical texts and excerpts from patristic writings and medieval theology in a manuscript known as the Book of Prophecies. This unprecedented collection was designed to support his vision of the discovery of the Indies as an important event in the process of human salvation - a first step toward the liberation of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim domination. This work is part of a twelve-volume series produced by U.C.L.A.'s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies which involved the collaboration of some forty scholars over the course of fourteen years. In this volume of the series, Roberto Rusconi has written a complete historical introduction to the Book of Prophecies, describing the manuscript's history and analyzing its principal themes. His edition of the documents, the only modern one, includes a complete critical apparatus and detailed commentary, while the facing-page English translations allow Columbus's work to be appreciated by the general public and scholars alike.

  • What is Forensic Prophecy? How do I tap into this unfamiliar realm of Forensic Prophesy? How do I catapult my spirit to the greater depths of Forensic Prophecy and navigate the spiritual planes, realms and dimensions with ease.? How do I crack the prophetic codes to excavate microscopic details pertaining to people's names, residential addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, car number plates and other hidden details. How do I engineer the Forensic prophetic technology to decode the beginning and the end of situations, people, places and events with unrivaled accuracy? These are torrents of endless questions which have profusely flooded the minds of many believers across the broad spectrum of Christian faith with regard to the art of prophesying forensically, accurately and articulately, yet many lament at the frustration of failing to secure the valid answers they need. Although much has been deliberated in the prophetic arena evidenced by the voluminous books written on the prophetic and the mushrooming of Prophetic Schools across the Body of Christ, there are still lingering questions across the Body of Christ triggered by the perennial hunger and unquenchable thirst for the prophetic especially matters of prophesying accurately, precisely and articulately. While anybody can prophesy, not everybody can prophesy accurately, precisely and forensically because it takes an understanding of a Biblical prophetic forensic technology as encapsulated in this book in order for one to be catapulted into that realm. For this reason, this book is the first of its kind as it exclusively and exhaustively touches on the subject of Forensic Prophecy. As a new paradigm in the prophetic realm, Forensic prophecy is a topic that has recently received great interest, culminating in some books being written on the prophetic yet none of them outlines the breadth and scope of Forensic prophecy especially the art of prophetic articulation and navigation. This book is an exceptional read as it seeks to examine the scope, depth and vast spectrum of the Forensic prophetic realm, in terms of how it operates, how to tap into that realm and prophesy with your eyes open. The sub-title of this book, "The Art Of Prophetic Articulation And Navigation" covers both PROPHETIC ARTICULATION which is the ability to speak prophetically and forensically as in the case of a Nabi and PROPHETIC NAVIGATION which is the ability to see in the spirit realm as in the case of a Seer. As you read this book, you will experience many facets to the prophetic streams which will allow you to experience the unfolding creative power of the prophetic ministry with unrivaled accuracy. It will catapult you to a higher prophetic dimension of forensic prophecy in which it's naturally supernatural to prophesy and receiving a prophetic word from God is a common experience. Moreover, you will receive such a heavy impartation of the prophetic anointing from the written pages of this book that will ignite a prophetic explosion in your spirit, causing you to prophesy with your eyes open! This book empowers all believers and prophetic ministers with revelatory knowledge and wisdom on how to operate in the Forensic prophetic realm of God and decipher the anatomy of the forensic prophetic grace. If you have never prophesied with unrivaled accuracy before, to the level of revealing and excavating hidden mysteries and microscopic details pertaining to people's names, phone numbers, birth dates, residential addresses, car number plates and other demographic details, the reading of this book will unlock your walk in the supernatural to unprecedented dimensions. As you read this book, you will be catapulted to higher and deeper levels of Forensic prophecy where you will be able to navigate and explore regions of mystery in the heavenlies with ease.

  • After twenty years of research, Dr. J. Barton Payne has compiled the one complete guide to Biblical prophecy. From the prediction of Adam's death in Genesis 2: 17 to the prophecy of mankind's perpetual worship of God in the new heaven and earth (Psalm 72:5), the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY discusses every verse of prophetic matter in Scripture. It identifies every probable point of fulfillment whether in the past, present, or still in the future. The first 144 pages of the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY set forth a systematic approach to the subject of Biblical prophecy and the legitimate place for prediction in it. The ENCYCLOPEDIA is arranged according to the 66 books of the Bible. In each book, all the verses on one prophetic theme are treated in one combined discussion. For example: The 12 verses of Genesis that foretell God's granting of the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham are discussed together. It is then shown how the promise was fulfilled in the days of Joshua. One of the ENCYCLOPEDIA'S concluding summaries lists all the 737 major subjects that appear in Biblical prediction, with the books and paragraphs in which each is found. This way, each prophecy can be traced from its first appearance in the Bible to its last. Among the many features is a complete list of all the Scriptural prophecies pertaining to Christ. No other book has ever examined Biblical prophecy so thoroughly or presented it in such a balanced perspective as the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLICAL PROPHECY. •1,817 entries covering all the Biblical predictions in both the Old and New Testaments •A complete discussion of all 8,352 predictive verses in the Bible •14 tables, including three on the Book of Revelation •Bibliography •4 summaries •4 statistical appendixes •5 complete indexes An indispensable tool for students of the Bible, for students in theological seminaries and Bible colleges, for pastors as a reference guide, and for concerned lay people. • "African women are the only women in the world whose ancient mothers were not born under the yoke of patriarchy. During ancient times, for the first 6,000 years, Africa was ruled by a powerful order of matriarchs. Considering the current status of African women around the world today, one can hardly be convinced that her matriarchal presence and the enormous influence she welded in the ancient world, had far exceeded the limited physical, cultural geographical and political designations of which Africa and her religions are confined today. During her reign, African religions had reached very high levels of theological and ritual development. And were the original spiritual home of the worlds first great oracles, prophetess and prophets. Under the rising tide of African patriarchy, the sacerdotal order of Sibyls were sold as slaves to build and work the powerful oracles they established in Ancient Greece, Rome, Turkey and Babylon. What is now currently the 'holy seat of the Vatican' in Italy, was originally the sacerdotal seat of these ancient black Sibyl Queen Mothers. Centuries before for Christ, they were known to heal the sick, restore dignity and strength to the weak, and restore sight to the blind. They were famous for curing lameness, epileptics, deaf mutes and lepers. They were said to 'cast out demons' and even to 'raise-up the dead' Their prophecies are the oldest and most authentic in the world. They were the basis for Greek and Roman tragedies and plays. More astonishing, their prophetic books were later collected by the Roman authorities, who needed a 'western theological' foundation in order to compete with the powerful levitical Jews. These Sibyl prophecies soon became the sole and undisputed precursor to the western, Christian Bible. As the first established, sacerdotal, African matriarchs, the Sibyls cultural and religious impact was arguably the most profound, on ancient civilization than modern history has ever revealed or care to admit. From Mesopotamia, to Libya, Mizarim (Kemet/Egypt), Ionia, Minoa, Peloponnese (Turkey) and Mycenae (Greece) and later Rome, the Sibyls were the primary, divine Vatican and absolute moral authority. The absence of African women's contribution in world history as major economic, political and spiritual players, as oppose to 'exceptions to the norm,' or mere appendages of 'great men', has been problematic and disturbing at best. For the first time ever, her real history is being unearthed, revealed and told. In its telling, many shocking revelations that remained hidden for more than 2000 years, will finally be know." -- Back cover

  • Jesus Christ gave His disciples information regarding what to look for in His second coming. The Bible tells us: And as He sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and the end of the world? –Matthew 24:3 But where else does the Bible give us information about His second coming? Moreover, which prophecies have already been fulfilled? In this book, you’ll get answers to questions such as: • How should we think about prophecy as Christians? • When can we expect future prophecies to be fulfilled? • What role do symbols play in prophecy? • What keys will help us understand prophecy? The central theme of prophecy is to point you and me to Jesus. It is redemptive in value. God wants us to know that He knows the future and that He has a plan for you and me. Written for all walks of life, the advanced student, as well as the beginner, this biblically rooted book will renew your faith as you walk with the Lord and find fulfillment.

  • It has often been noted that the Protestant Reformation of the early sixteenth century witnessed a revived interest in the scriptural notions of prophets and prophecy. Drawing from both late medieval apocalyptic expectations of the immanent end of the world and from a humanist revival of biblical studies, the prophet appeared to many as a suitable role model for the Protestant preacher. A prominent proponent of this prophetic model was the Swiss theologian and church leader Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575). This study by Daniël Timmerman presents the first in-depth investigation of Bullinger's concept of prophecy and his understanding of the prophetic office. It also engages with the history of the Zurich institute for the study of the Scriptures, which has become widely known as the »Prophezei«.

  • For years Bible Prophecy teachers have consistently interpreted bible prophecy using a methodology that results in a maze of false predictions, speculations, and errors. What has been accepted as the traditional way of 'interpreting' bible prophecy has created an atmosphere of confusion for most students and laymen. Moreover, the majority of preachers, teachers, televangelists, and book authors today, have consistently redefined the term 'nations' as in governments, state, or country. However, the true biblical definition of the word nations, peoples, clans, tribes, or ethnic groups has been ignored and disregarded. And, it is by this definition that God deals with mankind. Unfortunately the vast majority of Bible Prophecy teachers use the substituted definition to interpret bible prophecy. Blurring the ability to know the 'who' and the 'why' of the prophecies, by diverting attention to the states, governments, or countries instead. As a result when the state (not nation) of Israel was reestablished in 1948, the Christian community proclaimed it to be a miraculous prophetic fulfillment. However the problem with this supposition is that the true biblical definition of 'nations' was completely ignored. The shocking reality is this, the current occupants residing in Israel today are not the true nation (people, tribe, clan, ethnic group) of Ysrael; and are not the sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as identified in the scriptures. The 1980 Jewish Almanac and the Encyclopedia Judaica state that better than 95% of the Jews residing in the nation of Israel today, are of Ashkenazi or Khazar descent, and are not the Israelites of the Bible. So by substituting the biblical definition of nations with the new definition; prophecy teachers completely ignore the fact that the true nation (people, tribe, ethnic group) of Ysrael is not in the land! Shockingly 98% of all prophecy books on the market today consistently 'insert' the incorrect nation (people,

  • Many Christians think of end times prophecy as a gigantic, intimidating puzzle -- difficult to piece together and impossible to figure out. But every puzzle can be solved if you approach it the right way. Paul Benware compares prophecy to a picture puzzle. Putting the edge pieces together first builds the 'framework' that makes it easier to fit the other pieces in their place. According to Benware, the framework for eschatology is the biblical covenants. He begins his comprehensive survey by explaining the major covenants. Then he discusses several different interpretations of end times prophecy. Benware digs into the details of the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, the judgements and resurrections, and the millennial kingdom. But he also adds a unique, personal element to the study, answering questions as: -Why study bible prophecy? -What difference does it make if I'm premillenial or amillenial? If what the Bible says about the future puzzles you, Understanding End Times Prophecy will help you put together the pieces and see the big picture.

  • A Groundbreaking Interpretation of Prayer, Quantum Science, and Prophecy. Only one document was discovered completely intact among the 25,000 fragments of papyrus, parchment, and hammered copper known as the Dead Sea Scrolls: the Great Isaiah Scroll. Nearly one thousand years older than existing copies of the Old Testament's Book of Isaiah, the twenty-two-foot-long parchment was still rolled and sealed in its original earthen vase when it was discovered in 1946. The completeness of the Isaiah Scroll offers unprecedented insight into the power of an ancient mystery — a lost mode of prayer — that modern science is just beginning to understand. Displayed today in Jerusalem's Shrine of the Book Museum, the Great Isaiah Scroll is believed to be so precious by modern scholars that it's withdrawn into a vault beneath the building's floor in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. In The Isaiah Effect, the dazzling new work from the author of Awakening to Zero Point and Walking Between the Worlds, scientist and visionary Gregg Braden offers a radical departure from traditional interpretations of Isaiah's text. Weaving state-of-the-art research with his extensive knowledge of the ancient Essenes (the creators of the scroll texts), Braden invites us on a journey where science and miracles are merged into a new wisdom — and lead to a startling conclusion. He suggests that Isaiah, the first Old Testament prophet, left precise instructions to the people of the future describing an unconventional mode of prayer. Using principles recognized only recently in quantum physics, Braden demonstrates how Isaiah's nonreligious, nondenominational form of prayer transcends time and distance to bring healing to our bodies and peace to the nations of our modern world.

  • The writer titles this paper "Bible Prophecy" to distinguish it from the many false prophecies of contemporary times that are promoted under the pretense of "God's anointing." Some of the topics covered in Bible Prophecy: What are the Benefits of Bible Prophecy? What is The First and Greatest Prophecy? What is The Spirit of Prophecy? What are Relevant Prophecies of Latter Days?; Daniel's Prophecies about Israel's 70 weeks. What about the Second Coming, The Rapture, signs of the times, mathematical probabilities, the last trumpet? Does prophecy prove that Christ is the Messiah? How can we recognize False Prophets? What is the meaning of The End of the World? Will the Earth Literally Burn Up? Who are The Two Beasts of Revelation 13? Why is Prophecy Sometimes Hard to Interpret? Is Israel's Final National Restoration Prophesied? Who is the Rock of Salvation? Are today's Divine Healers genuine? The Greek word for prophecy (Strong's # 4394, "propheteia," prop-ay-ti'-ah) means, "To tell before." Some like to say that it is history written in advance. Bible schools use the word eschatology in reference to prophecy. Eschatology is the division of systematic theology dealing with the doctrine of last things such as Death, Resurrection, The Second Coming of Christ, end of the World (completion of the Age), Divine Judgment, and The Future State. A large part of the Bible is prophecy.

  • The Psalms generated more biblical commentary from early Christians than any other book of the Hebrew and Christian canon. While advances have been made in our understanding of the early Christian preoccupation with this book and the traditions employed to interpret it, no study on the Psalms traditions exists that can serve as a solid academic point of entry into the field. This collection of essays by distinguished patristic and biblical scholars fills this lacuna. It not only introduces readers to the main primary sources but also addresses the unavoidable interpretive issues present in the secondary literature. The essays in The Harp of Prophecy represent some of the very best scholarly approaches to the study of early Christian exegesis, bringing new interpretations to bear on the work of influential early Christian authorities such as Athanasius, Augustine, and Basil of Caesarea. Subjects that receive detailed study include the dynamics of early Christian political power, gender expressions, and the ancient conversation between Christian, Jewish, and Greek philosophical traditions. The essays and bibliographic materials enable readers to locate and read the early Christian sources for themselves and also serve to introduce the various interdisciplinary methods and perspectives that are currently brought to bear on early Christian psalm exegesis. Students and scholars of theology and biblical studies will be led in new directions of thought and interpretation by these innovative studies. "This wonderful volume shows us the Psalms as a living and sacred text, forming and nurturing the individual and communal lives of early Christians. Each essay sheds light of a distinct hue on this complex reality until the whole is seen with a clarity not previously apparent. These rich essays explore the techniques of ancient interpretation, the theological underpinnings that allowed the Psalms to be seen as a God-given language for those being incorporated into Christ, and the social contexts that shaped the use and interpretation of the Psalms. Each is excellent; as a whole the collection is a rare gift." —Lewis Ayres, Durham University "The editors of this volume have engaged a stellar cast of thoughtful scholars to add to the burgeoning retrieval of Christianity's faithful devotion to the Psalter. The essays herein attest to the Psalter's infinite fecundity to offer personal emotional support under pressured circumstances, a program for progress in the spiritual life, a map for ecclesiastical authority to lead the church, an opportunity to experience 'the whole Christ,' and much more. Each essay will repay the reader's effort tenfold." —Ellen T. Charry, Margaret W. Harmon Professor of Systematic Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary "This exceptional collection of essays brings the book of Psalms and its transformative role in early Christian lives into new focus. The distinguished scholars gathered in this volume illustrate how the Psalms animated the liturgical, devotional, and scholarly habits of early Christians. This singular book bequeathed a rich vocabulary to its readers and hearers, new ways of thinking about God and themselves, and ultimately the words with which to address God. The Harp of Prophecy provides a splendid introduction to the ways in which early Christians re-imagined the Psalms." —Peter Martens, Saint Louis University
