  • Monday, March 19, 2012. I had my first dream last night that indicates I am reliving my same life over again in a parallel world. In my dream, a woman that I know said to me, "There are two of you." I am astounded by her comment, because I seem to know that there are two of me in my dream also; that is, I have the knowledge that I have lived my same life before, and I say to her, just to make certain that she is sure of what she said: "Are there two of anybody else?' And she replies, "No; I only see two of you."

  • "Noman" is the story of an individual trying to leave his past and avoid his future. Despite determined efforts, he becomes the unwitting pawn of powers larger than himself. The opening of the story finds Noman in the process of flight. His world is dominated by a repressive religio-political system. Through the offering of human sacrifice, the forces of Chaos are subdued, and an unnatural order prevails. Finally overwhelmed by his role in the evil of this Order, the man attempts escape to the far reaches of the realm. This is a compelling story that is unique - not quite fitting into standard fantasy fare. Beyond being a nice action yarn filled with violence and supernatural overtones, there also are deep undercurrents for the more cerebral reader - encompassing theology, psychology, and philosophy. The influence of Chaos has a pronounced impact on Noman's character and morality. His becomes a degenerative slide from virtue to psychopathic madness. As he loses himself and hits moral bottom, Noman awakens to his greatest conflict - whether to embrace selfish ambition or sacrifice himself for the greater good. The fate of the universe hinges upon his decision.

  • A Collection of Mystic poems by Ahmad Noman. Here is what his best friend Taryn wrote about his poetry. She is a consistent reader of his work."Ahmad Noman has been a dear friend and teacher in my life for nearly 15 years. I often refer to him as Sensei. His exploration of his path, spirituality, and connection to God is that of curiosity, wonder, questioning and listening. And the way he shares what he's heard follows the same framework so that others may continue to question and pursue their own truths. Considering his writings will open your perspective in a way that will break your mind from the narrow understanding that modern life imposes. The words name all that we struggle to understand ourselves and our place in this tribe called humanity. Those words encourage self-reflection, struggle and a challenge to scrub away the window of your soul to see what is there. They crack open the door of dark complications that closes us off to following our hearts behind it. Because behind that door is what? Curiosity, wonder, questioning and listening."Empty yourself from all opinions and just absorb," he told me recently. Ahmad's poems will inspire all of us to do just that. Though there is much for him to teach, he would insist that there is simply much more for him to learn. His writings are a place for both."

  • An urgent, informed, intimate condemnation of the Canadian state and its failure to deliver justice to Indigenous people by national bestselling author and former Crown prosecutor Harold R. Johnson. "The night of the decision in the Gerald Stanley trial for the murder of Colten Boushie, I received a text message from a retired provincial court judge. He was feeling ashamed for his time in a system that was so badly tilted. I too feel this way about my time as both defence counsel and as a Crown prosecutor; that I didn't have the courage to stand up in the court room and shout 'Enough is enough.' This book is my act of taking responsibility for what I did, for my actions and inactions." --Harold R. Johnson In early 2018, the failures of Canada's justice system were sharply and painfully revealed in the verdicts issued in the deaths of Colten Boushie and Tina Fontaine. The outrage and confusion that followed those verdicts inspired former Crown prosecutor and bestselling author Harold R. Johnson to make the case against Canada for its failure to fulfill its duty under Treaty to effectively deliver justice to Indigenous people, worsening the situation and ensuring long-term damage to Indigenous communities. In this direct, concise, and essential volume, Harold R. Johnson examines the justice system's failures to deliver "peace and good order" to Indigenous people. He explores the part that he understands himself to have played in that mismanagement, drawing on insights he has gained from the experience; insights into the roots and immediate effects of how the justice system has failed Indigenous people, in all the communities in which they live; and insights into the struggle for peace and good order for Indigenous people now.

  • In recent years, concerns about the outcomes and nature of economic growth have given way to a new emphasis on its quality. This volume brings together prominent international contributors to consider a range of interrelated questions concerning the quality of growth in Africa, with a primary focus on sub-Saharan countries. Contributors discuss the measurement of growth, the transformations necessary to sustain it, and issues around equity and well-being. They consider topics such as the distribution of income gains from growth; the extent to which economic growth has resulted in improvements in employment, poverty, and security; structural transformations of the economy and diversification of the sources of growth; environmental sustainability; and management of urbanization. Offering both diagnoses and prescriptions, The Quality of Growth in Africa helps envision a future that goes beyond increasing GDP to ensuring that growth translates into advancements in well-being. Although the book focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, much of the contributors’ incisive analysis has implications for countries outside the region.

Industrial Policy and Economic Transformation in Africa

  • ISBN : 9780231540773

  • Genre : Business & Economics
  • The revival of economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is all the more welcome for having followed one of the worst economic disasters—a quarter century of economic malaise for most of the region—since the industrial revolution. Six of the world's fastest-growing economies in the first decade of this century were African. Yet only in Ethiopia and Rwanda was growth not based on resources and the rising price of oil. Deindustrialization has yet to be reversed, and progress toward creating a modern economy remains limited. This book explores the vital role that active government policies can play in transforming African economies. Such policies pertain not just to industry. They traverse all economic sectors, including finance, information technology, and agriculture. These packages of learning, industrial, and technology (LIT) policies aim to bring vigorous and lasting growth to the region. This collection features case studies of LIT policies in action in many parts of the world, examining their risks and rewards and what they mean for Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Industrial policy, once relegated to resource allocation, technological improvements, and the modernization of industries, should be treated as a serious component of sustainability and developmental economics. A rich set of complimentary institutions, shared behavioral norms, and public policies have sustained economic growth from Britain's industrial revolution onwards. This volume revisits the role of industrial policy in the success of these strategies and what it can offer developed and developing economies today. Featuring essays from experts invested in the expansion of industrial policies, topics discussed include the most effective use of industrial policies in learning economies, development finance, and promoting investment in regional and global contexts. Also included are in-depth case studies of Japan and India's experience with industrial policy in the banking and private sector. One essay revisits the theoretical and conceptual foundations of industrial policy from a structural economics perspective and another describes the models, packages, and transformation cycles that constitute a variety of approaches to implementation. The collection concludes with industrial strategies for facilitating quality growth, realizing more sustainable manufacturing development, and encouraging countries to industrialize around their natural resources.
