  • The Society of Captives, first published in 1958, is a classic of modern criminology and one of the most important books ever written about prison. Gresham Sykes wrote the book at the height of the Cold War, motivated by the world's experience of fascism and communism to study the closest thing to a totalitarian system in American life: a maximum security prison. His analysis calls into question the extent to which prisons can succeed in their attempts to control every facet of life--or whether the strong bonds between prisoners make it impossible to run a prison without finding ways of "accommodating" the prisoners. Re-released now with a new introduction by Bruce Western and a new epilogue by the author, The Society of Captives will continue to serve as an indispensable text for coming to terms with the nature of modern power.

  • Escalations in student violence continue throughout the nation, but inner-city schools are the hardest hit, with classrooms and corridors infected by the anger, aggression, and criminality endemic to street life. Technological surveillance, security personnel, and paramilitary control tactics to maintain order and safety are the common administrative response. Essential educational programs are routinely slashed from school budgets, even as the number of guards, cameras, and metal detectors continues to multiply. Based on years of frontline experience in New York's inner-city schools, Maximum Security demonstrates that such policing strategies are not only ineffectual, they divorce students and teachers from their ethical and behavioral responsibilities. Exploring the culture of violence from within, John Devine argues that the security system, with its uniformed officers and invasive high-tech surveillance, has assumed presumptive authority over students' bodies and behavior, negating the traditional roles of teachers as guardians and agents of moral instruction. The teacher is reduced to an information bureaucrat, a purveyor of technical knowledge, while the student's physical well-being and ethical actions are left to the suspect scrutiny of electronic devices and security specialists with no pedagogical mission, training, or interest. The result is not a security system at all, but an insidious institutional disengagement from the caring supervision of the student body. With uncompromising honesty, Devine provides a powerful portrayal of an educational system in crisis and bold new insight into the malignant culture of school violence.

  • Author : Mikita Brottman
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Pages : 288
  • ISBN : 9780062384355

  • Genre : Literary Criticism
  • A riveting account of the two years literary scholar Mikita Brottman spent reading literature with criminals in a maximum-security men’s prison outside Baltimore, and what she learned from them—Orange Is the New Black meets Reading Lolita in Tehran. On sabbatical from teaching literature to undergraduates, and wanting to educate a different kind of student, Mikita Brottman starts a book club with a group of convicts from the Jessup Correctional Institution in Maryland. She assigns them ten dark, challenging classics—including Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Poe’s story “The Black Cat,” and Nabokov’s Lolita—books that don’t flinch from evoking the isolation of the human struggle, the pain of conflict, and the cost of transgression. Although Brottman is already familiar with these works, the convicts open them up in completely new ways. Their discussions may “only” be about literature, but for the prisoners, everything is at stake. Gradually, the inmates open up about their lives and families, their disastrous choices, their guilt and loss. Brottman also discovers that life in prison, while monotonous, is never without incident. The book club members struggle with their assigned reading through solitary confinement; on lockdown; in between factory shifts; in the hospital; and in the middle of the chaos of blasting televisions, incessant chatter, and the constant banging of metal doors. Though The Maximum Security Book Club never loses sight of the moral issues raised in the selected reading, it refuses to back away from the unexpected insights offered by the company of these complex, difficult men. It is a compelling, thoughtful analysis of literature—and prison life—like nothing you’ve ever read before.

  • Maximum Security Ward and other poems, including the whole of the title-sequence (1970) and generous selections from Graffiti (1959) and Asbestos Phoenix (1968), at last provides a full view of a poet whose humor and humanity together make him our truest descendant of Mark Twain. Graffiti offers "high-spirited footnotes, intensely personal yet at the same time public" (New York Times Book Review) and "poems so lightly wise, and wisely light, that his work confirms Plato's old fear of letting poets run at large" (Christian Science Monitor). Asbestos Phoenix, "a book that alone would place Ramon Guthrie among the major poets of the mid-century" (The Nation), comprises poems in which "Guthrie carries on from the best directions of the twenties in his special mixture of liveliness with seriousness, and of artistic exploration with a deeply informed sense of structure" (New York Times Book Review).

  • While Mac OS X is becoming more and more stable with each release, its UNIX/BSD underpinnings have security implications that ordinary Mac users have never before been faced with. Mac OS X can be used as both a powerful Internet server, or, in the wrong hands, a very powerful attack launch point. Yet most Mac OS X books are generally quite simplistic -- with the exception of the author's Mac OS X Unleashed, the first book to address OS X's underlying BSD subsystem. Maximum Mac OS X Security takes a similar UNIX-oriented approach, going into significantly greater depth on OS X security topics: Setup basics, including Airport and network topology security. User administration and resource management with NetInfo. Types of attacks, how attacks work, and how to stop them. Network service security, such as e-mail, Web, and file sharing. Intrusion prevention and detection, and hands-on detection tools.

  • Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning author Rose Connors returns with Cape Cod attorney Marty Nickerson in a riveting new legal thriller. At the urgent request of Harry Madigan, Marty takes on the defense of Louisa Rawlings, a woman suspected of murdering her wealthy husband. Harry is Marty's law partner. He's also her lover -- but he used to be Louisa's. Marty is simultaneously intrigued and disturbed by her new client. Louisa Rawlings is Marty's polar opposite. Glamorous and charismatic, she's entrenched in the good life, openly coveting every luxury money can buy. District Attorney Geraldine Schilling believes Louisa was motivated by greed, and to Marty, that motive seems all too plausible. It also seems too tidy. Marty's gut tells her the murderer was motivated by something far more personal. As the evidence against Louisa mounts, though, Marty begins to doubt her own judgment. The people she normally turns to for perspective are incapable of helping her. Her young associate, Kevin Kydd, is so bewitched by Louisa that he's in danger of jeopardizing his entire career. And Marty fears that Harry might be too.... Illuminating the law even as she entertains, Rose Connors once again proves that she is a consummate storyteller whose legal expertise and passion for the law shine through on every page.

  • Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I could never get past the first six or seven pages of Heart of Darkness, a difficult novella published in 1899. I liked the ominous atmosphere, and I was glad to get out. #2 I wanted to be an academic like Lyndall Gordon, who had a love of literature and shaped and framed it. I was surprised and dismayed when she said she didn’t see me in that role. #3 I was not ready for Heart of Darkness when I first read it. It was a book that took me a long time to love. I thought that the men might enjoy the gruesome, disturbing parts of the story, but I never lost sight of the fact that it had taken me a long time to love it. #4 I began the book club by reading a little bit of the background information on Joseph Conrad and his journey upriver in the Congo. I then read a passage from a letter he wrote to his aunt about his health, which was far from good.

Calvin Hall, a killer, a crack addict, and one of the wildest inmates around, and Marcel Weaver, a giant of a man, are among the hardened criminals sent to a massive complex in the desert. Together, they make a pact to escape at all costs. The desert, alarms, and walls are just the beginning of their worries. There is also Dominic Silvestri, the warden, who is hell-bent on maintaining control of his facility. He has picked the best corrections officers from around the country to help him oversee the prison.
