Walks on the Wild Side
In the early 1980s, John Pakenham walked a total of 1,500 miles, with a series of companions from the local Turkana and Samburu tribes and their long-suffering donkeys, around a lake in the Great Rift Valley of northern Kenya. Repeatedly beset by extreme thirst and dehydration, bitterly cold torrential rains, poisonous spiders, vindictive mosquitoes and the ever-present threat of bandits, not to mention a fatal fight between two of his companions, he was lucky to live to tell his tale. Pakenham's account provides a rare glimpse of a tough terrain and its even tougher inhabitants, where every day was a battle for survival. This is extreme travel that, four decades on, still packs a powerful punch.

The Crannog
The crannog - a fortified island palace on a small lake in a remote Welsh mountain kingdom - is all that protects Ruadh and his family from marauding Vikings and power hungry Saxons. In 916, a cataclysmic event sends father, daughter and son in different directions. Their epic journeys see them drawn deep into the political intrigues of their time, and swept up in the volatile movements of trade in human lives and luxuries. Travelling to the darkest regions of human conflict and to the distant margins of early medieval Europe, body and mind are tested as each tries to make a life in a violent and rapidly changing world. Weaving archaeological evidence and historical record into a fast moving fictional tale, Trevor Houghton conjures up the sights, sounds and smells of early medieval life, from the hearths of Brycheiniog to the rapids of the Dnieper River, and the riches of the Byzantine Empire.

The Great Medicine Road, Part 2
During the early weeks of 1848, as U.S. congressmen debated the territorial status of California, a Swiss immigrant and an itinerant millwright forever altered the future state’s fate. Building a sawmill for Johann August Sutter, James Wilson Marshall struck gold. The rest may be history, but much of the story of what happened in the following year is told not in history books but in the letters, diaries, journals, and other written recollections of those whom the California gold rush drew west. In this second installment in the projected four-part collection The Great Medicine Road: Narratives of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, the hardy souls who made the arduous trip tell their stories in their own words. Seven individuals’ tales bring to life a long-ago year that enriched some, impoverished others, and forever changed the face of North America. Responding to often misleading promotional literature, adventurers made their way west via different routes. Following the Carson River through the Sierra Nevada, or taking the Lassen Route to the Sacramento Valley, they passed through the Mormon Zion of Great Salt Lake City and traded with and often displaced Native Americans long familiar with the trails. Their accounts detail these encounters, as well as the gritty realities of everyday life on the overland trails. They narrate events, describe the vast and diverse landscapes they pass through, and document a journey as strange and new to them as it is to many readers today. Through these travelers’ diaries and memoirs, readers can relive a critical moment in the remaking of the West—and appreciate what a difference one year can make in the life of a nation.

Charity McLaughlin is a highly skilled trial lawyer, practicing law in Tacoma, Washington. She also has a new and exciting relationship with sheriff's detective Sean Robinson. Charity's friends have recently helped her survive serious mental illness and a harrowing attempt on her life. Now she simply hopes to live normally, with as little stress as possible. But this is not to be. When Sophia and Manuel Vega come to her with a claim involving Sophia's badly botched surgery, Charity is once again embroiled in intrigue. Sophia Vega had been horribly scarred by the negligence of a noted plastic surgeon, who had claimed he could repair the results of an earlier mastectomy and make her beautiful again. Instead, he left her with jagged scars across her chest, and skin which resembles a burn victim. Charity takes the case. But in doing so, she is unwittingly pulled into a deadly battle between Mexican and Honduran drug cartels, which are moving up the west coast into Washington State. This drug war is also being fought by her detective boyfriend, Sean. Charity does her best to help Sophia Vega in her claim against the doctor, while facts begin to unfold which make her wonder if one of the Vegas could be involved in the drug runnning operation. The final question becomes whether Charity and Sean will escape with their lives.
